How much laundry does a single person generate?

We asked Henri Levy, managing partner at DoMyLaundry.ca based in Toronto, Canada the question, how much laundry does a single person generate each week and he provided the following answer.

The amount of laundry a single person generates will vary depending on the following:

  • How active a lifestyle they maintain (fitness, social engagements, hobbies, etc.)
  • Dress code for work (dry clean clothing, heavy labour, etc.)
  • Seasonal Factors (summer: perspiration, winter: layering, road spray, slush and salt etc.)
  • Personal attention to cleanliness
  • Allergies
  • Incontinence
  • Travel away from home for business

Below is a good, healthy guide to how much laundry an individual may generate weekly when following a good laundry practice:

  • 7-10 underwear (daily plus 3 workouts/week)
  • 1-10 pairs of socks (varies based on season and workouts)
  • 3-4 pairs of pants, shorts, skirts, dresses
  • 3 shorts or workout pants
  • 1-2 outerwear (seasonal)
  • 7-14 shirts vary based on season: winter layering, workout wear social engagements etc.)
  • 2 -5 Bath Towels (include towels used for workouts)
  • 7 washcloths
  • 1-4 hand towels (include towels used for workouts)
  • 1-2 bath mats
  • 1-3 kitchen towels
  • 2-3 kitchen wash rags
  • 1 kitchen mat
  • 2-3 pillowcases (more if there are allergies or skin sensitivities)
  • 1-2 fitted sheets
  • 1-2 flat sheets
  • 1 blanket, duvet, comforter (monthly)
  • As far as how much weight this amounts to, the individual’s size will factor in. a good estimate for an average individual would be 20-30 lbs. per week.  This could be less for some individuals or more depending on so many factors personal to each individual.
